Let's compare D5000 with D80. Both cameras produced Nikon. The first model related to Entry-Level DSLR, the second to Semi-Pro DSLR cameras. Nikon D5000 was released in 2009, and Nikon D80 in 2006. D5000 is newer, which is a plus. D80 3 years older. However 3 years, the difference is not so bad.
The sensor resolution of D5000 is greater than that of D80. However, the difference of 2 MP is not very significant.
